Lugar won a sweeping victory and Republicans took control of Evansville's city hall for the first time in 16 years Tuesday. But in most of Indiana. it was the Democrats who had cause to celebrate. They won at least 68 of Indiana's 114 mayor's offices.

nearly matching the 72 won by the GOP four years ago. Many Democrats said the gains pointed the way to victories in the 1972 general elections, just as the GOP strength in 1967 carried over in 1968. Akins. Seymour R2, died at 2:15 a. m. this morning at Jackson County I Schneck Memorial Hospital after an illness of about eight months: A resident of this community for most of her life, she was member of St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Born Jan. 18, 1885, in nati, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Berdina Kovener Schleirtker. On Feb. 28, in Crothersville, she married Walter Scott Akins, who died July 23, -1952. Surviving are three children, Mrs.

Walter E. (Agnes) Bishop, Seymour R2, Herman F. Akins, of Seymour, Clayton T. Akins, Paris Crossing R1; one sister, Mrs. Grace Fitch, of North Vernon; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Four sisters and one brother preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Friday from the St. Paul United Church of Christ with the Rev.

(AP)A Republican election judge was shot to death during an altercation at the Goose Rock voting precinct south of here Tuesday, and hours later murder-warrants were issued for two men. Commonwealth's Atty. Paul Hieronymous said warrants were issued for James Smith, 39, and George Duff, in his 40s or 50s, in the slaying of John Mills, 70. Smith was a Democratic election judge.

Hieronymous said Mills and Smith became involved in "some sort of difference" either in or near the voting booth, and that a shooting incident ensued. Mills died of four bullets in his Smith was wounded and taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Authorities said Duff was not in custody early Tuesday night. Hieronymous said additional warrants might be issued. "There is a possibility that several other people bystanders were involved," he said.
